Sant Josep de sa Talaia

Sant Josep de sa Talaia takes up the entire southwestern chunk of Ibiza. You will spend a lot of time navigating its dusty coastal roads if you choose to stay here. The municipality includes everything from thick pine forests to massive superclubs. It covers the largest land area on the island. People usually come looking for either the quiet rocky coves or the loud venues, and you often end up doing both in the exact same weekend. That makes it a highly practical base for a trip.

The View of Es Vedrà

A 382-meter limestone rock sticks straight out of the water off the coast. Local stories claim it is a magnetic energy center or a remnant of Atlantis. The best place to look at Es Vedrà is from the sand at Cala d’Hort. Parking here gets chaotic by mid-afternoon. Arrive early if you want a spot without walking a mile down the steep access road in the heat while angry drivers try to squeeze past you. Grab a paella at one of the beachfront chiringuitos and wait for the sun to go down behind the rock. Nobody is allowed to actually climb Es Vedrà or the smaller Es Vedranell next to it because they are protected nature reserves.

Swimming on the West Coast

Cala Comte is known for its transparent water and the rocky outcrops where crowds gather for sunset. It fills up fast. Further south you hit Cala Tarida. The water here is shallow and the sand is soft. That makes it heavily populated with families carrying inflatable toys every day of the week. If you want something quieter you have to work for it. A short hike takes you to Cala Molí. There are no facilities or sun loungers at this cove. Bring your own water and food.

Ses Salines Natural Park

The southern tip of Ibiza is a UNESCO World Heritage site built around historic salt flats. Over 200 species of migratory birds use these wetlands as a rest stop. Flamingos stand in the shallow ponds during the spring and autumn migrations. The Ses Salines Natural Park boundaries also include the massive Las Salinas beach. Pine forests grow right up to the sand. Keep your feet on the marked paths when walking around. The dune ecosystems get destroyed easily when visitors wander off into the brush. Local guides run walking tours that explain the history of the salt production.

Climbing Sa Talaia

Ibiza is mostly flat but it does have one real mountain. Sa Talaia reaches 475 meters high and sits right in the middle of the municipality. Drive a rental car up the winding dirt road to the top. Hiking trails also lead up to the summit defense tower for people who prefer to walk. On a clear afternoon you look right across the water to see Formentera.

Playa d’en Bossa

Sant Josep officially contains Playa d’en Bossa. This long stretch of sand is totally dominated by water sports and beach clubs during the day. The promenade stays packed with people walking between bars. But at night the massive venues take over. Ushuaïa and Hi Ibiza sit right on this strip and bring in huge crowds for international DJs. Staying in this specific town means the island’s loudest nightlife is quite literally right outside your door.

The rest of the municipality feels completely different. Drive ten minutes inland and the clubs disappear into quiet hills.
